E.F. KNAPP AIRPORT

The Edward F. Knapp Airport, then known as the Barre-Montpelier Airport, was established in 1930 as a joint project of the two Central Vermont communities. Originally a grass field with two runways, it has been expanded over the years with both runways now lengthened and paved and electronic navigation equipment installed to make the airport usable in most any weather.

In 1970, it was renamed after Edward F . Knapp former mayor of Montpelier and State Commissioner of Aeronautics, who dedicated much of his life to the furtherance of aviation in Vermont. One of ten state-owned airports, Knapp is ideally located to serve the needs of business travelers who require quick access to the capital area. It is commonly used by some of the area's largest employers and their clients, either with company-owned or chartered aircraft. The airport doubles as an excellent destination for travelers headed for one of the area's numerous ski or other vacation resorts. With an instrument landing system, the airport is accessible regardless of the season.

A full service restaurant is located in the terminal building and nearby is the fixed base operator, Vermont Flying Service, operated by the Roberti family since 1944, offering fuel (both 100LL and AVJET A), aircraft parking space, flight instruction and maintenance. Increasing the use of the airport by local businesses, tourists and recreational fliers is a primary goal of the Knapp Airport Association, a group organized to promote the airport and to work on issues ranging from safety to politics.

Trips throughout northern United States and southern Canada that would take days in a car are easily flown in hours in a typical light plane. Edward F. Knapp Airport (MPV) is located midway between the cities of Barre and Montpelier in the Town of Berlin.
