As the following numbers indicate, the rapid population growth of the past fifteen years is bringing the Town's population close to the all time high of 1,709 residents reached in the year of 183O. This trend is evident throughout much of Central Vermont. Most towns, including Calais, were relatively self-sufficient communities with a stable population base. However, from the mid-18OO's until the late 196O's, the Town lost population. That trend has now ended and the current population level is now the largest since 185O. Population forecasts by the State Planning Office and Health Department estimate continuing increases.
