East Montpelier History

Land use in East Montpelier is characterized by large open and agricultural areas with concentrations of developed land chiefly in East Montpelier Village, North Montpelier, and East Montpelier Center. The remainder of the Town is agricultural land or open space with farm houses, residences, and seasonal homes dispersed along Town roads.

Agricultural lands make important contributions to the Town aesthetically and economically and should be preserved. Potential property owners and/or builders in areas surrounding active farms should be wanerd that certain inconveniences, such as occasional unpleasant odors, slow moving vehicles, and stray animals, are unavoidable and must be tolerated. Deliberation of disputes over such matters should give all due consideration to the pre-existing status of agriculture, and to the community-wide benefits derived from agriculture.
