Cabot Tour...

(Approximately 3 Hours)

The cabot tour takes you to the rural farm country of the upper Winooski River Valley. In addition to the interesting tour available at the cabot Creamery where the area's milk is processed into cabot's famous cheeses, the tour offers stops at sugaring operations and a bird carving studio. The tour winds through some of the finest open country in Vermont, offering beautiful views of mountains, valleys, and lakes.

Begin in East Montpelier (from Montpelier take Rte. 2, from Barre take Rte. 14), at the blinking light in town head north on Rte. 14. One mile north of town on the left is the bragg Farm, which has tours of an old style maple sugaring operation. In addition to their maple products they also sell Vermont-made handcrafts.

Continue north from the bragg Farm with beautiful views to your right of Spruce Mountain and the range which divides the north flowing Champlain St. Lawrence River basin and the Connecticut basin draining south. 1.3 miles north of the bragg Farm turn right on Coburn Road. This back road descends to the Winooski River passing Cate Farm Road on the left and crosses a covered bridge just below an oxbow in the river. A half mile further the road reaches Rte. 2 where you will turn left heading east through Plainfield to Marshfield.

In Marshfield turn left off Rte. 2 onto "Cabot Road." After about 4 miles you come to the town of Lower Cabot, and just around the bend of the road is the village of Cabot. cabot Creamery is on your right. Guided tours and a video presentation are offered on the history of dairy farming, cabot beginnings and how cabot products are made.

Leaving cabot Creamery, take a right and go to the center of town. Across from the Village store bear right and follow what is known as the Danville Hill Road. You will quickly rise up above the town of Cabot. About 1.3 miles up the hill, on the right, look for a sign saying "Henry Menard Bird Carvings." Henry Menard offers life-like carvings of birds..but beyond his woodcraft studio lies another surprise: a tropical greenhouse complete with orchids, spanish moss, a pool, and waterfall.

Nearing the top of the hill, you will find a marker on the right saying Center Road. Now if you stocked up on picnic provisions, here is a good spot to park your car. Following a trail for about a half mile on foot brings you to the original center of town. The first church; first school; first graveyard...they are all here with visible foundations...a secluded picnic spot!

Back in the car, proceed toward the top of the hill. At the top it is worth pulling over to see the exceptional view of the many mountain ranges: Sugarbush, Camel's Hump, Glen Ellen, the Worcester Range...

Leaving the crest, travel down the backside of Danville Hill. Note the Indian Summer Farm on your right, by Bermingham Road, where there are often horses grazing out in the pastures.

From the top to the bottom of the hill is about 3 - 3.5 miles. You come out onto Rte. 2, making a lefthand turn. Travel only .5 mile to see the sign marker saying "turn right for Goodrich's Sugar House." Follow this road .5 mile to the Goodrich Farm and Sugarhouse.

This sugarbush has been sugared for six generations, back into the 1800's by Goodrich and Abbott ancestors!!

Returning to Rte. 2 from the Goodrich farm, you may choose to turn left and return to Montpelier (a 35 - 40-minute drive). You may also turn right and follow Rte. 2 east for just over a mile to Molly's Pond Craft Shop on the left. This is a marvelous shop with hand crafted sterling silver and gold, Vermont pottery, and books. Continuing on, Rte. 2 converges with Rte. 15 at West Danville. Turning right, onto Rte. 15, will bring you into Danville in 4 - 5 miles. At the four corners, stop in the town's center, turn left to find parking on your right for The Creamery Restaurant. This restaurant, besides offering exquisite cuisine, also offers you the chance to begin and end this tour at a Creamery.
