Central Vermont and Beyond

 

Here are a few day trip suggestions.

Waitsfield, Waterbury, Stowe

Take Route 100 north to Waitsfield. If you enjoy kitchen gadgets and cookbooks, stop by The Store, an antique red building on the right shortly after The Den Restaurant. Continue to Bridge Street. Here and along Route 100, you'll find a variety of shops including a pottery, Christmas shop, stuffed animals and even gargoyles! Head up to Waterbury and The Cholesterol Causeway - so called because of all the foods you can sample. There's Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory, Green Mountain Chocolates, coffees, cabot Cheese, Cold hollow Cider Mill...Continue heading north to Stowe. Stop by The Trapp Family Lodge. Granddaughter Elizabeth plays Tuesday nights at The tucker Hill Lodge in Waitsfield. Try the gondola ride or take the twisty ride up Smuggler's Notch.(Summer Only)

Warren, Granville, Middlebury

Head south on Route 100 and stop in Warren Village. The Warren Store has wonderful baked goods and it's a good place to pick up a sandwich for later. There's a gallery, artisan's shop, basket weaver and potter here. Follow the road across the covered bridge which will bring you to Route 100 and take a left. about 8 miles down on the right, you'll see a pretty waterfall, Moss Glen Falls. Continue to The Vermont Only Store. Gifts made by Vermont artisans and beautiful wooden salad bowls are milled here. Ask for a tour. Continue to Route 100 then take a right onto Route 125. Stop at Texas Falls or The Robert Frost Trail for an easy walk. Robert Frost's poems are posted along the later. From here go into Middlebury. This is a pretty college town, home to Woody Jackson, designer of the cows on Ben and Jerry's trucks and T shirts. ThereÕs an old fashioned soda fountain, the state craft shop at Frog hollow and more. If you enjoy horses, visit The Morgan Horse Farm in nearby Weybridge. Route 7 and North Museums, shops and of course more food! Wildflower Farm, The Vermont Teddy Bear Factory (stuff your own!), Shelburne Farm, Shelburne Museum (if you wish to visit the latter see us for discounted vouchers and allow yourself plenty of time), Dakin Farm (hams and maple syrup), The Vermont Country Store, Woodenware...For the really ambitious, continue north to Burlington, VermontÕs biggest city (only 39,000 people) but cosmopolitan by Vermont standards, home to several colleges.

Montpelier, Barre, Cabot

Route 100 to Route 100B to Route 2 to Montpelier, the smallest capital in the US- but it does have a gold dome, Guided tours of the recently restored state house are available. Take a left off State Street to Main Street and County Road and visit morse Farm, a sugar shack. Backtrack into Montpelier. From here you can decide whether to head up Route 2 to cabot Or to sidetrack to Barre (pronounced BARRIE) to the worlds largest granite quarry, Rock of Ages. This quarry will be the setting for the home of Mr. Freeze in the current Batman Movie, they shot the film there last winter. Follow Rt 2 to Rt 215 to cabot for a factory tour of the cheese making facility. From there, venture to St. Johnsbury, home of Maple Grove salad dressings and maple sugar candies, visit The Fairbanks Museum, The Athenaeum or try The Miss Vermonter Diner (yum!). To get to Barre from Montpelier get onto I 89 South and go two exits to exit #6 follow the signs for S. Barre. At the intersection at the end of the road from the interstate follow the signs for Graniteville.

Quechee and Woodstock

Quickest route is Interstate 89 to Route 4. Woodstock is a pretty town ÒmanufacturedÓ by the Rockefellers. Nice shops and galleries. Visit Billings Farm, a working farm for a wagon ride or learn to milk a cow. Quechee is home to Simon Pearce Glass Works, lovely shops at the mill and a beautful gorge.

Manchester

Approximately 2 hours south, take Route 100 to Route 73 to Route 7. Factory outlets, Hildene (the estate of Robert Todd Lincoln), Norman Rockwell Museum.
