Central Vermont's cities and villages boast designs and architecture popular more than 100 years ago. A walk through the downtown areas provides insight into the early years of our nation's history.

Barre, Montpelier, Waterbury, and Waitsfield have brief, self-guided tours. Brochures with maps are available from heritage groups and downtown merchants.

Guided tours of Montpelier are provided each week at 10 a.m.Saturday throughout the summer, sponsored by Montpelier Heritage Group. A donation of $5 per person is requested. Tours convene at the State Tourism Building, 134 State St., across the street from the State House. Tour takes approximately 90 minutes.

Barre's Walking Tour

The Barre Tour was produced by Barre Main Street Program, Barre's downtown preservation and development group. Thanks are extended to Carol Dawes for her personal effort and to the Barre Historical Society for allowing use of materials from Barre in Retrospect.

A downtown walking tour brochure is available at the Central Vermont Chamber of Commerce, the Aldrich Public Library, and local merchants. Historic buildings are marked with granite plaques.

A detailed guide to the buildings of downtown Barre, Barre In Retrospect, is available at area bookstores and Bob's Camera Shop in Barre for $7.50.
